LPC has planned, prepared and served a community meal at noon on the last Sunday of the month since January 31, 1993. Thousands have been fed at our tables and hundreds of members have given their time, skills and energy through the years in service to Christ’s command to “feed the hungry…” Community meals have been provided mostly by churches, but also by other service organizations. In recent years, there has been a steady decline in attendance at most community meals, including our own, for reasons that are not entirely clear. At the height of the program, LPC would often serve 100-125 people at a meal. Attendance now hovers between 45-65. Other community meal sites are experiencing similar attendance decline.
For several years our community meal program has been coordinated by Sandy Shaw with significant assistance from Kay Jones along with many faithful volunteers. Sandy and Kay will be stepping down from their leadership roles at the end of 2019. The time has come to discern whether LPC will continue to minister to the hungry through a community meal ministry or consider other possibilities. A “town hall” style forum has been planned to get the conversation started. It will be held in the Chapel following the worship service on Sunday, November 3. Jim Butler will moderate. Please come, share and listen as we seek to be good disciples serving our community.
